The Past & Present Of Greenwich Village In New York City

Greenwich Village is a small section of Manhattan south of 14th Street and west of Broadway. The streets in the Village are named as opposed to being numbered as they are in most parts of Manhattan. Though it was once a mecca of Bohemian and alternative culture, very few Bohemians could afford to live here today. Now, Greenwich Village has traded its edge for sophistication. Many celebrities and personalities now call The Village home; among them Liv Tyler, Jon Stewart, Uma Thurman, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Also, Greenwich Village hosts some of the nation’s top universities– New York University’s and Cooper Union’s main campuses are located in The Village.

Modern Greenwich Village is located on former marshland. 16th century Native Americans called it Sapokanikan (Tobacco Field); Dutch settlers called it “New Amsterdam.” In the 1630s, English settlers conquered the New Amsterdam settlement, and Greenwich Village began to exist as a hamlet completely separate from the rest Manhattan/New York City. In 1713, Greenwich Village was officially referred to as Grin’wich in Common Council records. A yellow fever outbreak in the early 1820s forced many Manhattan residents to abandon their homes and seek the healthier air in Greenwich Village; thus, The Village became densely populated. The Village has always been at the forefront of new movements in art, politics, or culture, but many believe it reached its creative peak in the middle of the 20th century.

The entirety of Greenwich Village is a bohemian culture landmark. The neighborhood is known for its various incarnations of alternative and avant-garde art and culture. Eugene O’Neill, a celebrated American playwright, was a regular in Greenwich Village in the 1910s. In the 1950s, a group of artists that would eventually come to be known as the Beat Generation found a haven in Greenwich Village; The Village figures heavily in the works of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William S. Borroughs, and Dylan Thomas. Additional, many legendary musical acts of the 1960s can trace their roots to Greenwich Village, such as The Mamas and the Papas, Peter Paul, and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, Nina Simone, and Joan Baez.

Though Greenwich Village may no longer be a conglomerate of starving artists, it is still a leader in progressive, liberal attitude. The Village Voice, an arts-oriented tabloid newspaper focusing on events in and around Greenwich Village was the first and best of its kind, though a recent buyout has left the paper inconsistent at best. The alternative underground newspaper is available via subscription to non-Village residents. The Village Voice kept Greenwich Village “on the map” after the disintegration of the Beat Generation and heralded the Village’s love affair with anything and everything alternative or avant-garde. The world’s oldest gay and lesbian bookstore, Oscar Wilde Bookshop, is located in Greenwich Village and was founded in 1967. Every year, the Village hosts New York’s Village Halloween Parade– a mile-long cavalcade of drunks, misfits, drag queens, exhibitionists, and “regular” costumed individuals. The Parade is the largest Halloween event in the United States and draws an audience of about two million spectators.

The Un Headquarters In Nyc

NYC has been the site of the United Nations Headquarters since 1952. The complex is located on the east side of Midtown Manhattan in the Turtle Bay neighborhood, overlooking the East River. The 18 acre site is an international zone which belongs not to the U.S., but to all member states; this makes for some complicated legal rhetoric. The actual earth underneath the building belongs to the United States, but the United Nations Headquarters site is granted extraterritoriality status, meaning that it is exempt from local jurisdiction. However, this does not grant immunity to those who commit crimes at the Headquarters, as they must remain under the jurisdiction of the United States. The physical address is 760 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY, 10017; all mail received at this address is sterilized.

The land for the United Nations Headquarters was purchased by the Rockefeller family and donated to New York City. Wallace Harrison, the lead architect on an international team, designed the buildings and was also the Rockefellers’ personal architectural advisor. Prior to constructing this complex, the United Nations Headquarters was temporarily housed at Lake Success, NY, on Long Island. Because the buildings need to be repaired, some members have suggested that a new temporary location be erected at the Lake Success site or a Brooklyn location; others suggest building a permanent replacement facility where the World Trade Center towers once stood.

Construction of the United Nations Headquarters was financed by an interest-free loan from the United States government. The Headquarters consists of four main buildings–the General Assembly building, the Conference Building, the Secretariat building, and the Dag Hummarskjold Library. When the Secretariat building was first erected, it was controversial and met with a huge public outcry. In time, the building has become a modernist landmark. The Dag Hummarskjold Library is named after the Swedish United Nations Secretary-General, and is connected to the Secretariat and Conference buildings through ground-level and underground tunnels.

In 1945, after the Second World War, the United Nations was founded to replace the League of Nations. Fifty countries signed the United Nations charter, hoping that it would ultimately help them avoid war and intervene in international conflicts. The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members who have the power to veto any United Nations resolution. The five members are representatives from countries who were victorious in the World War II: Russia, France, China, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

The United Nations has its own emergency services–security, fire department, and postal administrators. Visitors often send postcards from the UN building, as it is the only place in the world to get the distinctive United Nations stamp. Guided tours of the facility operate daily from the General Assembly Public Lobby. The tour shows the main Council Chambers, the General Assembly Hall, and art of the member states of the United Nations. The United Nations complex is notable for its outdoor sculptures and gardens, including the “Knotted Gun” sculpture, a gift from Luxembourg, and the former USSR’s “Let Us Beat Swords Into Plowshares.”

The Statue Of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island, New York, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and as a gesture of friendship between the United States and France. At 350 feet, 1 inch tall from the ground to the flame, the Statue of Liberty is approximately the size of a 22 story building. In 1886, the statue was the tallest structure in New York City. Lady Liberty is made of pure copper (3/32 of an inch thick-about the thickness of two pennies put together) except for the flame on her torch, which is coated in gold leaf. Originally, the statue was copper in color, but has turned green from natural oxidation. The greenness is actually called a patina coating and protects the copper.

The statue faces southeast, which is a prime position for greeting ships as they enter the harbor. It used to be possible to climb to the torch, but it has been closed since the “Black Tom” explosion of July 30, 1916. Visitors were able to ascend to the crown of the statue until the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Since then, the crown has been closed and the National Park Service has no immediate plans to reopen it.

“Liberty Enlightening the World” is the Statue of Liberty’s proper title. She was sculpted by Frederic Aguste Bartholdi and the internal structure was engineered by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame. Because the statue is so enormous, she had to be transported to the United States aboard the French warship Isère in 350 pieces. The statue arrived in New York on June 17, 1885, but stayed in crates for 11 months until the pedestal could be finished. Emma Lazarus’s famous “Statue of Liberty Poem”, “The New Colossus” was read at the dedication and later inscribed on a plaque. From the time of her dedication in 1886 until 1902, the Statue of Liberty was a functional lighthouse.

The statue itself is symbolic of freedom, but certain aspects of Lady Liberty are specific symbols. The seven points on her crown represent the seven seas and the seven continents. She holds a flaming torch in her right hand, a symbol of enlightenment. The stone tablet she bears in her left hand is inscribed with the date, July IV, MDCCLXXVI, or July 4, 1776. Her face is said to be modeled after Bartholdi’s mother.

In 1983, American Express made the Statue of Liberty a beneficiary of one of the earliest cause marketing campaigns. For every purchase made with American Express, the company donated one cent to for the restoration of the statue. All together, the drive raised over $1.7 million dollars. The following year, the statue was closed so that a $62 million restoration project could be completed before her centennial celebration.

The Statue of Liberty is an important and cherished part of American history. Lady Liberty stands as a beacon of freedom to millions of people around the world.

How to Find a Florida Malpractice Lawyer

If you are one of those people that find themselves having to deal with a malpractice case, no doubt finding an excellent lawyer is going to be at the top of your list. This will be even more important to you if you live in Florida, where the amount of malpractice claims is quite a bit higher than in most other states. The amount of senior citizens in the region definitely contributes to the high amount of medical malpractice cases, but of course there are other factors involved as well.

Malpractice is not just something that you read about; rather, it can and does really happen to many people, and unfortunately it can cause lasting damage. Should you ever have medical malpractice or dental malpractice occur to you, the first thing you will want to do is to make sure you hire a Florida malpractice lawyer that will provide you with the help you need. So, how can you find the best lawyer for your malpractice case? Read on for some great answers to your question.

Do They Require Money Up Front?

Another thing to consider when you are trying to find a Florida malpractice lawyer is whether or not they ask for any money up front. Most good lawyers will offer you a free consultation and only charge you if they take and win your case. If they do offer to accept payment after you case has been won, be sure that you find out how much they are going to take because some lawyers may take up to 50% of what they win you in a malpractice case.

Get Recommendations from Others

Many times you may be able to get recommendations for a great Florida malpractice lawyer from someone you know. Check with your family, your friends, or even your current lawyer if you have one. Usually you can find out who the good lawyers are and the ones to stay away from just by taking the time to do a bit of asking around. Word of mouth advertising can definitely steer you in the right direction.

Check Out Some Ads

Also consider checking online or in your phone book. See if the lawyer has any catchy ads and if they catch your eye. When checking online you may even be able to find some articles written by the lawyer as well, and reading the articles may give you a good idea of whether or not they are a good choice for your case. While checking ads online and in the phone book is great, beware of any ads that sound too good to be true. But be sure to use the other tips listed here too, because even lousy lawyers can write great ads.

Consider the Entire Firm

When selecting a good Florida malpractice lawyer you should check out more than just the lawyer. Checking out the law firm is going to be an important thing as well. See if the law firm is doing well financially and whether or not they may have the cash resources that will be needed to deal with your case.

Have a Face to Face Meeting

One of the best things to do to make the final decision about a lawyer is to get a meeting with a prospective lawyer. Find out whether or not your personalities mesh and get a feel for the lawyer as a person. Often that first meeting may be able to tell you a great deal about the lawyer and whether or not you want that particular Florida malpractice lawyer working on your case. If you have any doubts at all or something just doesn’t feel right, keep looking.

Check with the Florida Bar

Checking with the Florida bar association may be another thing to do when you are trying to find a good lawyer in Florida. There you can see whether or not the lawyer has had any disciplinary actions against him or her and whether or not they are in good standing with the bar as well.

The Money is not the Only Factor

The lawyer will probably give you an estimate of how much he thinks he can win for you, as well as your chances of winning the case based on the circumstances when you speak to him, but remember, the amount of money should not be the deciding factor. Consider their skills and expertise, and not only the estimate that they give you.

Your malpractice case can either be made by your lawyer or lost by your choice of a lawyer. As you can see, picking out the right lawyer is imperative if you want to win your case. Take the time needed to research lawyers and find the best malpractice lawyer in your area of Florida.

With a wide selection of lawyers available, it is very easy to become lost and confused while trying to find the best lawyer for your needs. However, follow these steps for some tips on finding the best lawyer for your needs.

First, to find a lawyer that specializes in bankruptcy services check with your local bankruptcy court and ask for the names of lawyers. They typically see lawyers on a daily basis and can help you find someone who has a lot of experience. However, they are not allowed to give recommendations themselves. Nevertheless, learning which lawyers come to mind first for them can often be a huge advantage. Other important things to look at is consider getting a recommendation from your local bar association.

Your local bar association may require you to pay a small fee for the recommendation, however the lawyer that is recommended from the bar association will specialize in bankruptcy services. Other options you have are looking in the phone book. Many lawyers will place an ad, which will give a small description of their available services and what they specialize in.

Another option that you can explore includes the ability to ask friends and other businesses for references of good lawyers. You can often find out whom not to consider this way, if someone has nothing good to say about a lawyer then it is a good idea to avoid that lawyer as much as you can. Your recommendations can be both good as well as bad, and both are just as valuable when searching for the perfect lawyer.

One other great place that you can get referrals from, are from lawyers themselves. Many times lawyers will recommend someone who specializes in specialized areas such as bankruptcy services, divorce, family law and other such things. These referrals are often really good because lawyers usually only recommend other good lawyers. Lawyers do not enjoy referring lawyers that are of sub-par quality. You can find out more information on filing for bankruptcy at http://www.bankruptcyservicesonline.com

If you are looking for a good lawyer, then you should ensure that you spend plenty of time doing research. Never just, assume the first lawyer you talk to will be the best lawyer for your case. With plenty of lawyers to choose from, you can be assured that you will find a great lawyer that will help you achieve the best results possible. Selecting the best lawyer is never an easy task, but following these tips and suggestions will help you find the best lawyer for your case and circumstances.

Remember, finding a great lawyer that specializes in bankruptcy services is not an overwhelming task. It is possible to find a good lawyer. In addition, if you find a lawyer that you think you are happy with, insist upon reading over the retainer contract before agreeing to sign it. This could save you hundreds of dollars in wasted legal fees.

DUI DEFENSE

July 8th, 2007 by admin
Posted in DUI | No Comments »

DUI (Driving under the influence) or DWI (Driving while intoxicated) is regarded as the most serious misdemeanor offense. In many cases, repeat offenders are considered felons. Worst case scenario, the offense can be marked and will forever go on your record, whereby you will suffer socially and financially.

A number of people charged with this offense are not always guilty. Scholarly research shows that most of the sobriety tests performed are inconclusive. In many cases, chemical tests, breath analyzers (Intoxilyzer 5000), or infrared breath machines are not considered valid. Many of the field sobriety tests performed to judge whether the driver’s motor skills are impaired are considered faulty, as they are not performed uniformly and in many cases the police officers improperly guide and instruct the person. In the hands of an adept criminal lawyer or a DUI lawyer who can argue the credibility of the tests, you can avoid the damages that DUI charges may bring. DUI Lawyers can also obtain a pre-trial ruling through which the sobriety tests can be excluded from being produced as evidence on the grounds of lack of a adequate scientific analysis.

Effects of DUI charges:

# Guaranteed suspension of driver license and driving privileges. In some cases, if you hold driver licenses in more than one state, you can lose both. Suspension can last anywhere from 90 days to 5 years.
# Your vehicle can be sent for impounding.
# Probation.
# Time doing Community Service.
# Heavy fines.
# Mandatory counseling.
# Incarceration (even for first timers).
# House arrest.
# And in most cases, time in prison.

Most of the proficient and experienced DUI attorneys and Criminal Defense Attorney’s will tell you that the majority of people charged with DUI/DWI are not irrational juveniles, but average, law-abiding citizens who were slapped with heavy fines and charges after just two glasses of wine. As laws get tougher, equally tough are the criminal lawyers who can tackle most of the charges. Do not go to an average lawyer who might naively expose you to more liabilities. DUI/DWI offenses are ugly, and if not handled correctly, the charges can accumulate.

If you are wrongly charged, by law you have no reason to be facing charges. So remember the law is on your side. Hire an excellent criminal lawyer with whom you can go through all of the details of the trial. Discuss with them the reason for the charges, and all possible allegations and charges that the opposing counsel might throw at you. Also try to find outstanding character witnesses who will stand by you. Therefore, it is important to hire a knowledgeable DUI lawyer who will guide you in the preparation for the trial and make you aware of all the penalties you may face.

It is important to avoid drunk-driving at any cost; but if you have already been charged, it is imperative that you act quickly. As soon as you are charged with the misdemeanor, contact a skilled DUI Defense Attorney who can help you avoid the harsh penalties. For skilled and expert advice from a San Jose DUI defense attorney, contact Lipton Law Offices today.

Utah mortgage

Attention Utah Home Owners/Buyers, you need to read this

Utah home buyers, are you ready to buy a home, refinancing your current mortgage, or finally get that home equity loan? If you are looking for a Utah Mortgage you need to watch interest rates from the Fed closely, because changing rates could make a huge impact in your home loan options. Interest rates are the biggest affect the type of mortgage available to choose and affect when it’s smart to make a change.

What is the best type of Mortgage, and how do you find a mortgage in Utah? Here are some answers.

A fixed-rate mortgage is a wise choice when interest rates are rising, because it locks in the current rate and you are protected from future rate hikes. For falling rates, an adjustable-rate mortgage or (ARM) becomes better, since its interest rate changes over time (usually every one, three, or five years), which helps you to benefit from lower rates. Many people choose an ARM even when rates are still rising because the initial interest rate on an ARM can still be much lower - many times as much as 2 percentage points lower than a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage loan. This means until mortgage rates have increased a full two percentage points you’ll pay less. There are also fancy ARMs that are hybrids, which for a certain time period have a fixed rate, and then will become adjustable. If you are only planning on staying in your home for a few years hybrid ARMs can be the right choice. Long-term trends however, are difficult to predict. Many times a change in the interest rate trend will make it wise to switch to a different type of mortgage. With falling rates, you can save money by moving from a fixed-rate to an adjustable-rate mortgage. This will allow you to benefit from the lower rates. If interest rates look set for a ongoing rise, switching from an ARM to a fixed-rate mortgage can lock in a lower rate. This will protect you from paying a higher mortgage payment. You may even want to try a cash-out refinancing to borrow enough to pay off credit card debt , which charges a much high interest rate than the mortgage. Just make sure that any closing costs related to refinancing don’t offset its benefits. These are just a few good ideas to follow when you are considering buying a new home, refinancing your existing home or if you need an equity loan for remodeling.
